Detailed Itinerary.
Day 1: Arrival.
A Precise Destinations company representative will welcome you at Kilimanjaro International Airport upon your arrival. After a long journey, he will take you to the Panama Garden Resort, where you will find all the amenities you need, including warm rooms with hot showers, a restaurant with a wide selection of great food, a friendly staff, and Internet access. At the scheduled time, you will receive a briefing during which your guides will go over all the specifics of the next walk. They will respond to your inquiries, ensure that you have all you need for the hike, and loan out equipment if needed.
Accommodation: Panama Garden Resort.
Day 2: Moshi – Londorosi Gate – Starting Point.
You leave the hotel an hour later after an early breakfast (07.00hrs) and arrive at the Londorosi Gate at 11.00hrs to finish the formalities, just in time for your picnic lunch. You have a quick drive to the starting place of today’s trek after Londorosi. You will be walking for 3.5 to 4 hours today covering a distance of 7 km/4 miles.
You begin at about 2,100 metres above sea level and end up at 2,650 metres. The Lemosho Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the west, which some claim offers the best views of the peak. While seeing buffalo, elephants, or leopards would still be feasible, it would be uncommon to come across them on your walk’s initial stretch if you are fortunate enough to spot any colobus or blue monkeys. You’re in for a treat as you go steadily uphill through a beautiful woodland with vibrant flowers. Typically, you can get at Mti Mkubwa Camp, also known as “Big Tree Camp,” around 18.00 hours, and dinner is served at 19:30.
Accommodation: Mti Mkubwa Camp.
Day 3: Mti Mkubwa – Shira 1 Camp.
You will rise from 2,650 metres to 3,610 metres today, and you anticipate a longer walking time of between 4.5 and 5 hours. In fact, you start climbing straightaway, to the top of a ridge as you head eastward and upward. Today, the trees of your first day thin out, you eventually leave the forest environment behind as you move onto the moorland. From here, you are able to get your first view of both the Shira Plateau and mighty Kibo itself. Your breakfast time is set for 07.00 hrs, and your departure time is 08.00 hrs.
As always, your best bet is to focus on walking slowly, or pole pole, to lessen the likelihood of feeling ill. You are mostly heading east, and you eat a picnic lunch at around 1300 hours. After lunch, the walking gets a little flatter with the snow-capped Kibo in front of you, then it becomes steeper again until you reach the Shira 1 Camp. There will be a welcome period of relaxation after arriving at around 16.00 hours, followed by dinner service at 18.30 hours.
Accommodation: Shira 1 Camp.
Day 4: Shira 1 Camp – Shira 2 Camp.
You may have less climbing to do today than you had yesterday, so you celebrate by having breakfast later, at a leisurely 8 a.m, and leaving an hour later. We say “potentially” because, depending on how you’re feeling, your guide will explain that you have the option of trekking via the Shira Cathedral today. You will walk a distance of approximately 7 km/4 miles on average today. It is a gradual ascent, so you should allow between three and four hours to walk the entire way. You began your journey by heading southeast through the Shira Plateau’s moor and heathlands. Here, buffalo, dik-dik, and klipspringer graze, and they are sometimes sighted.
By taking the normal path, you hope to get at Shira 2 Camp, also known as Shira Huts, at 3,850 metres by 13.00 hours, in time to have a prepared lunch brought to you. Dinner will be served today at 8:00 p.m. (As previously said, you will have the choice to detour through the Shira Cathedral today, which is located at 3,872 metres, or 12703 feet). This requires longer walking, but the breathtaking panoramic vistas of the plateau and beyond will make up for the extra hours of trekking. This choice will be thoroughly discussed with you by your guide.
Accommodation: Shira 2 Camp.
Day 5: Shira 2 Camp – The Lava Tower – Descent To Baranco Camp.
You will resume your early morning routine today at 7:00 a.m., in preparation for your 08.30 a.m. departure. You will conclude the day only 50 metres higher than when you began, but in the meantime, you must climb to the base of the Lava Tower (4,600 metres), after which you must descend once more to Baranco Camp (3,900 metres), where you will spend the night. You have about 10 km/6 miles to cover. You will be trekking for approximately 6.5 to 7 hours in total, after which you will leave the Shira Ridge. There will be more people when the Lemosho Route connects with the busier Machame path! Today, the landscape mostly consists of Alpine desert. You will arrive in Baranco at 16.00 hours, have your picnic lunch at 13.00 hours, and have dinner at roughly 19.00 hours.
Accommodation: Baranco Camp
Day 6: Baranco Camp – Karanga Camp.
Your departure from camp is set for 08.30 hours, so you eat breakfast a little later (07.30 hours). Even though today’s walk is only 4 km/2 miles long, it will nevertheless require between 3.5 and 4 hours of hiking. After arriving at Karanga, 3,995 metres above sea level, you will stop for a prepared lunch at about 13.00 hours. You will then have the afternoon to take in the scenery before dinner at 18.00 hours.
The most difficult portion of today’s stage begins early in the day when you have to scramble up the almost vertical face of the Baranco Wall, which is also known as the “Breakfast Wall” because you tackle it immediately following breakfast. Views of the Heim Glacier await you at the summit of this ascent. Following this, the remainder of the hike is a little easier as you first progressively drop into the chilly but stunning Karanga Valley and the gully below. After there, you carry on and ultimately ascend a difficult sequence of switchbacks to arrive at the 3,995-meter-high Karanga Camp. You have gained only 95 metres in altitude altogether today.
Accommodation: Karanga Camp.
Day 7: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp.
The day starts with breakfast at the camp at 07.30 and ends at 08.30, making it another short day in terms of miles. You will walk for approximately 3.5 to 4 hours today, covering a distance of about 5 kilometres (3 miles), with an elevation gain of about 670 metres. Your goal is to reach the 4,673-meter Barafu Camp by 13.00 hours, at which point you will receive a prepared meal as a reward. (Since tomorrow is the summit day, it will be crucial to unwind and get ready for the demanding job that lies ahead.) Dinner is served tonight at 17:30, which will allow you to have an early night. Today’s stage leaves Karanga behind and climbs slowly through a stony and desolate landscape, with views of the Decken and Kersten glaciers to your left. At the summit of the ascent, the scenery stays desolate until you descend into a valley and see Rebmann, another glacier, for the first time. The objective for today is the Barafu Camp, which is reached after a short, hard ascent and a trek at the end of this valley.
Accommodation: Barafu Camp.
Day 8: Ascent To Uhuru Peak – Descent To Mweka Camp.
Today is the hardest day, but ideally you will feel extremely accomplished because you have reached the top of Kilimanjaro! It goes without saying that your “Summit Day” schedule will be somewhat different from your previous mountain days. You get up at 23.00 hours and have tea and biscuits at 23.30 hours before leaving at midnight. The day begins with a lengthy, strenuous rise from 4,673 metres at Barafu to 5,756 metres at Stella Point; some of this ascent will require walking on scree, which will make the trek more challenging. The summit is still 139 metres away from Stella Point and requires a 45-minute walk. Your objective is to reach the peak by approximately 7:00 a.m., at which point you should celebrate your accomplishment, snap priceless pictures, and savour this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
Following your ascent of 5,895 metres, you descend back to 4,673 metres’ worth of terrain at Barafu. Here, you rest for a few hours, eat breakfast, and then set off again at 13:30 to complete your descent to Mweka Camp (3,100 metres), where you spend the night. It is anticipated that you will arrive at 17:00 and eat dinner at 19:00. You walk for 11–14 hours today to cover a total of around 17 km/10 miles; it’s hard work, but perhaps you’ve reached your goal.
Accommodation: Mweka Camp.
Day 9: Descent From Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Moshi.
While you’re still in awe of your accomplishment, breakfast is served at 7:00 a.m, and at 8:00 a.m, you get the opportunity to honour your trekking team at the “Tipping Celebration.”
The journey departs at a leisurely 09.00hrs and descends to the 1,640-meter-high Mweka Gate, even though you still have 10 km/6 miles to trek. You will receive your well-earned certificate there and be given a prepared lunch at noon. When you return to your Moshi hotel, your ride will be waiting for you, giving you the option to unwind or, if you still have energy, to celebrate.
Accommodation: Panama Garden Resort.
Day 10: Kilimanjaro International Airport – Departure.
You will have breakfast at your hotel and be ready for the 10 a.m. check-out time after getting a full night’s sleep. Please let us know if you would like to stay at the hotel during the day when you make your travel arrangements, and we will let you know how much a “day room,” which lets you stay until 18:00, will cost. We will then make the reservation on your behalf. Since this package already includes the transfer services, you will be picked up from your hotel and dropped off at the airport. Our Jerry Tanzania Tours guide will meet you in the afternoon to give you a pre-safari briefing if you have made reservations to go on safari.
